- Dylan Dastey, Engineering Director

HOW DYLAN ACCELERATED HIS CAREER PROGRESSION AND BECAME DIRECTOR WITHING 12 MONTHS

Dylan was Head of Engineering at a major transport company, with leadership responsibility for the maintenance of a fleet of over 700 vehicles across 8 sites and 200 plus colleagues.   He was clear on his ambition – step into a Director level role within maximum three years, whether at his employer or elsewhere – but wasn’t sure how to plug the gaps in his leadership that were holding him back. He came to coaching to help him develop these leadership skills. Within less than twelve months of starting coaching, he was promoted to Engineering Director. Not only did he achieve his promotion, he learned how to pull himself out of unhelpful patterns and develop the skills with confidence, empathy, and focus.

What was going on in your business & life when you began to work with Megan?

I was Head of Engineering at Lothian Buses, a major transport company in Edinburgh and the UK’s largest municipal bus company, managing the fleet and leading on the wider strategic transition to net zero vehicles.

The biggest challenge was the volume of work I was juggling. I was managing infrastructure projects, challenging principal contractors, handling supplier relationships, and making strategic decisions that stretched beyond my remit while also managing the daily business needs. I was spending 75% of my working week on issues that as a company we had effectively paid contractors to manage.

Given this level of responsibility, I knew I was ready for the next step in my career. I was keen to achieve a Director-level role within three years, either at my employer or elsewhere. However, I was aware that I had gaps in my leadership approach and I suspected they might hold me back unless I addressed them.

What hesitation or concerns did you have about working with Megan?

I was initially apprehensive because I hadn’t previously thought about coaching or what it could offer me. My hesitation was really around questions like: What do I get out of this? What do I need to bring to the process?   I’m someone who learns by doing, and that approach was ultimately validated through the coaching experience.

What specific results have you achieved?

The most tangible result is my promotion: I was appointed to the role of Engineering Director during my time working with Megan.

I’ve also achieved huge results in my improved confidence, adaptability, and ability to trust my gut. I've introduced 100 electric vehicles, and infrastructure for 150 electric buses, in the heart of Edinburgh. We won Transport Operator of the Year. UK City operator of the Year and I met key KPI targets and improved our environmental footprint significantly.

What did you like most about working with Megan?

What I liked most about working with Megan was the lack of pressure combined with strong guidance and support. She gave me space to vent, offered different perspectives, and helped me explore things without forcing an outcome. I already had the answers, but I struggled to communicate them clearly. Megan identified a way to draw that out and bring clarity, which allowed me to stay true to myself and communicate with clarity.

What was the biggest thing that you took away from working with Megan?

The ability to constantly review my performance both positively and negatively, while identifying the areas that keep me performing in a positive mindset. A big part of this was a leadership framework that became central to our work together. Coaching helped me understand my own patterns – what Megan called my recipe for drama. I could see how I was allowing things to build up, implementing solutions without consultation, feeling resentful, and then withdrawing. I learned to identify when I was enabling unhelpful cycles, and consciously step out of them even when it was hard.

What do you think would have happened if you hadn’t worked with Megan?

Coaching gave me the tools to see that I was perpetuating the dynamics in my role that were draining me. Even if I’d secured another role, I’d likely have taken those same patterns with me. I now have the techniques to help support my growth and succeed in the complexity of my new role.

Who would you recommend to work with Megan?

I would recommend Megan to anyone with a genuine desire to challenge and understand themselves with an ambition to professionally grow and develop.
